The edges of the black lace brushed the floor as she swayed back and forth. Tayka was dancing with no one, just practicing, since the ballroom was empty and free for anyone to use. For now, at least. For the past hour she'd been uninterrupted, but she wouldn't be surprised if anyone came in. In fact, she wouldn't mind. For the past thirty or so years, she'd been very secretive, avoiding the daylight and avoiding all people and vampires. She watched from the shadows, learning their conversation styles, habits, everything. But that was only so no one would be suspicious. She continued to flow across the ballroom, eyes closed, enjoying the near-silence.

The second story balcony was shaded in darkness. The shadows made sure to hide the female that stood there. She had been reflecting on her many years on the earth in the lonely place of many memories when another of her kind had arrived. Layla had decided to let this other female dance to her own music for a while, she was actually quite good. Images flashed before her eyes, men in tailored suits and women in hooped ball gowns circling the room below. The picture was imposed over the single dancer on the ballroom floor. Slowly the memories faded and all Layla was left with was another vampire in an empty room filled with memories.
Stepping from the shadows and making her way down the curving staircase at the side of the balcony, Layla moved toward the dance floor. Her dark burgundy skirt brushed over her bare feet. Her steps made no noise on the plush and faded carpet that lined the stairs. Dark hair flowed around a pale face and fell to the middle of her back. She reached the floor level and waited, one hand poised on the banister, waiting for the other female to acknowledge her presence.

Tayka sighed, moving to a far end of the ball. She thought about what she was going the next night and the next, but she didn't even know her plans. Each day was the same, hiding and coming to the ballroom.
As she ceased dancing for a moment, and immediately had a sense that someone else was in the room. Opening her eyes, she turned toward the staircase, where a girl stood. Tayka smiled, producing a small wave.
