AND HAVE THE PEOPLE CHANGED?
001. YOUR PLAY BY• Lenny Kravitz
002. GENERAL APPEARANCE•
Ray has thick, kinky black hair, often pulled away from the scalp into an afro. When it gets long enough, or he can’t find a shower often enough, he’ll grow it into dreadlocks.
His eyes are nearly black in color but still thoughtful. His large eyes are framed by unusually long lashes and unruly eyebrows. He stands just at 6’ but the addition of so much hair tends to make him look a little taller. His weight tends to fluctuate depending on whether or not he has a job (and thus sufficient money to buy food) but he hovers around 190 lbs and is a lean and lightly muscled guy. He’s not really too concerned about fashion. If it’s hot, as it often is in new Orleans, he wears less clothing. When it’s cold, he’ll put on just about anything to not freeze to death. As long as it doesn’t smell too bad, he’ll wear it. Tattered jeans, t-shirts, and heavy-duty shoes (with the occasional flip-flop) make up his small wardrobe.
003. NOTABLE FEATURES, BODY MODIFICATION, OR SCARS• Both ears are pierced along with his nose. Ray sports several large tattoos across his arms, chest, and back.

006. HISTORY OVERVIEW•
In order to understand Raymond’s life, we have to travel back a few years. Several hundred years, in fact. The first and probably most powerful of the Voodoo queens of New Orleans was born a free woman in 1801 by the name of Marie Laveau. She was born as the bastard child of a wealthy white man and Creole mother. She was married in 1819 to Jacques Paris, an immigrant of Haiti, in the Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. He died mysteriously a year later. Marie became a professional hairdresser to many wealthy white women, where she gained an immense amount of knowledge by listening intently to their gossip. Much of her supposed power came from her knowledge. She took a lover during this time by the name of Christophe Glapion and they were rumored to have 15 children together before his death in 1835. Around 1827, Marie Laveau II was born. Both women were fear for their apparently vast knowledge of inside information on the wealthy white citizens of New Orleans, though Marie Laveau II was considered the more spectacular Voodoo queen of the time, prepared public demonstrations including those for St. John’s Eve on the bayou of New Orleans. These women are the ancestors of our Raymond Laveau. Some of the other siblings of Marie Laveau changed their surnames as the prosecution of ‘witches’ continued through the south, but it, as well as the Voodoo power, has lasted in at least one line of descendants.
Jump forward several years to the 1960’s. Blacks are being persecuted all over the south in their attempts to gain equal rights. Carole Laveau, Raymond’s grandmother, is the new Voodoo queen of New Orleans. Business is scarce, chased away by fear of persecution by whites and white supremacists. Lyna Marie Lavaue is a young woman of just 15 years, being trained in the art of voodoo. But fear for her own life is warring against her mother’s desire to pass on the voodoo tradition to another generation. The course of Raymond’s life was decided on a hot July night in 1965. Walking home from town together, the mother and daughter are kidnapped and taken to a remote field twenty miles outside the city of New Orleans. Lyna is brutally beaten and raped by the white men. Then both are tied to wooden crosses at the shore of a bayou by members of the Klu Klux Klan. As the KKK members float away on shanty rafts, they set fire to the crosses. As the fires begin to burn away the skin of both Carole and Lyna, rain clouds suddenly begin to gather above them. Carole, in a state of trance, calls rain down upon them. The fire around her surges, searing her skin, before the sky opens up and a storm dumps water on both women, putting out the fires before they can become deadly. Terrified by the witchcraft, the KKK members flee. Eventually, Carole and Lyna are able to free themselves and return to New Orleans for medical help. The men are never convicted.
Ten months later, a baby is born. Lyna, ashamed of the child, names her Mallory, meaning ‘Ill-Omened’. But Carole, sensing something more powerful in the baby, insists on the middle name of ‘Marie’. This is Raymond’s older sister.
