There was a peculiar spring in the young vampire’s step as she sauntered down the uneven pavement. The night was cold, not that she could feel it, and passers by eyed her with the sort of confusion one would find if they walked into the wrong bathroom. Lillienne hadn’t exactly planned to be anywhere else but inside a nightclub, but her sense of direction was about as good as an outdated street directory, and she couldn’t very well ask the next person she passed, could she? It was bad enough she’d let that woman squeeze past her earlier… that could have ended horribly. This ‘control’ thing was so overrated. Here she was, just trying to walk down a street without jumping on someone. Well, when it’s put like that... why not loosen the ropes a bit? Lillienne clickety-clacked down the pavement in black, heeled boots and smiled invitingly at the next person she saw – who returned the gesture with an appalled stare and hurried along the strip.
Feeling an odd sense of rejection, Lil looked down at the dark overcoat she’d donned earlier, many thanks to that nice lady who used to work behind the bar at one of the clubs in this massive place they call a city, and nodded knowingly. She’d fastened all of the buttons and tied the sash around her waist in a pretty bow and, paired with the fact that her dress was shorter than the coat, she probably looked like a hooker. Lil laughed; a series of bubbly, high pitched giggles which sounded more like it should belong to a child, instead of an adult. Eighteen counts as being an adult, right? Crossing the road, Lillienne ignored the beeps of passing car horns and shouts from drivers. What are you going to do,
Her light coloured eyes fell on a wrought-iron fence. Beside it stood a young woman, presumably in her early twenties, blonde, tall and on the slim side, Lillienne noted. She gave her a subtle once-over and looked away. Her fashion sense wasn’t bad either. Silently cursing her own poor outfit choice, Lillienne walked over to the woman and stood underneath the lamppost beside her. Her head began to throb and her heart – if she had one? – began to race, but she remained composed. Amazing! It is possible! The tall blonde smiled, the kind one gives someone they briefly lock gazes with as they pass them in the street, not the kind that says ‘come on, you’re hungry and I’m bored’. Pity, there were so few humans out there who wouldn’t mind if they were bitten by a vampire. Then again, that could all just be bravado, and those naïve fanatics would really scream and run if a vampire advanced on them. There was only one way to find out, but Lil wasn’t feeling that adventurous.
Lillienne returned the lady’s smile and nodded once, pretending to be waiting for something by glancing up and down the street. She could waste time by creating small talk, asking what time a bus usually comes, if they even venture out into the rowdy French nightlife, and she could start up a conversation about the Eiffel Tower or whatever seemed appropriate to talk about on the side of the street, but the vampire didn’t know whether she could contain herself or be at risk of launching herself at this lady, fangs out and eyes blazing. It suddenly didn’t seem fair – this was too easy,
Opting for a variation of plan B, Lillienne waited for the street to be clear of cars and pedestrians and pulled the blonde backwards, into an alleyway, shrouded in shadows. The woman had only seconds to attract attention to herself, and managed to get a small cry to ring out in the darkness. The new vampire fumbled with her prey, a wriggling, whimpering things with flailing limbs, and scowled. She clamped a hand over the blonde’s mouth and sank her teeth into her neck; missing the spot she really wanted, although she was close. Five minutes later, Lillienne stared down at her coat, feigning disappointment at ruining the silver, sequined mini dress. “Oh dear, I think this needs replacing,” Giggling at herself, Lil quickly emerged from the shadows in a grey, knit dress that reached her knees. Having abandoned the bloodstained coat and too-short dress, Lil deemed herself presentable and resumed her search for a building with loud music, human alcohol and a menu with variety.
