So Larkin had been in this crazy, chaotic new place for barely a couple of hours and already she was undeniably & absolutely in love. The architecture, the history, the people... everything was gorgeous (for lack of a more profound word) there was nothing to describe it!
Immediately upon arriving at her brothers loft she was enthralled. It wasn't exactly the revival mansion she had pictured herself living in, but she could definitely see herself living here too. One whole side of the flat, 2 or 3 stories up, was covered in windows overlooking all the rooftops of New Orleans (or at least that's it seemed to be all of it to her. But then again she was kind of shell shocked at the moment). The style of the whole loft was entirely her brother, but that suited her just fine, they had relatively the same taste. Giant, fluffy, leather couches. Dark, abstract, art. Glimmering, hard wood, floors. Yea... it was definitely like it here.
To top the whole thing off with a cherry, her brother had even painted her room in her all time favorite colors... lime green walls, dark purple ceiling and black molding on the ceiling and floors. And her bed! Situated right in the middle of the already massive bedroom, against the wall opposite the door (which was entirely windows) was a bed that belonged in the Renaissance, with four posters and a canopy to boot.
Larkin threw herself down on the bed, letting out a massive sigh. Wow!.
So, I take it that means you like it Lark? her brother, Skylar, asked. His muscular frame enveloping the doorway.
Like it?? Are you Insane?? I LOVE IT!! I didn't know anyone going to college could afford to look at something like this, let alone own it.
Yea, well mom and dad helped out a little. I'm glad you like it.
True, her parents were rather well off. It would only make sense that they'd help Skylar out with it, it's the kind of family they were... close.
So, what's first on your agenda Echo? Skylar asked, using her favorite pet name.
Boardwalk! My camera was the first thing I packed. she exclaimed excitedly, pulling her $2500 SLR camera out of it's special compartment in her suitcase.
I was actually planning on taking you there tomorrow, you know, after you were unpacked and settled a bit better. I have a date tonight, in a few hours actually. Her brother replied, shattering her reverie.
I'm a big girl, I can take myself you know. she gave him her best scolding glare, failing miserably and breaking out in a smile after only a few seconds.
We both know how good your sense of direction is, I would feel safer taking you myself.
You're as bad as mom and dad. I have to grow up sometime Skylar, wasn't that the point of moving away? I'll have my phone with me, and I'll call you if anything goes wrong.
I still don't feel comfortable with it Lark...
Please..... she begged, feigning puppy-dog-eyes.
Fine! But if anything happens, you call. I mean it! I'm not against grounding you. he joked.
Larkin launched herself off the bed, into her brothers arms. You know you're the best big brother ever right?
I know. he replied.
Larkin knew she had entirely just inflated his ego, which definitely didn't need nurturing.
After throwing her cell phone, lip gloss, wallet, a few other things her brother insisted on (like mace!), and of course her camera into her "Jack" (Nightmare before Christmas) shoulder bag, she headed out the door and into the unknown.
The cabby drove way too fast, but other than that the short ride was very pleasant. The scenery, even though she wasn't partial to towns, was beautiful in it's own right.
She hopped out of the car, practically throwing her fare and a small tip at the driver, and headed towards the boardwalk. The smell of ocean brine, the sounds of people talking, and the whole atmosphere hit her with a rush that nearly knocked her off her feet.
I can't believe I live here now. she muttered to no one in paticular as she pulled out her camera and started snapping pictures with the fervor of a kid who just got exactly what they wanted.
In a sense, it was exactly how she felt; entirely and completely alive and free.
