The sun was just starting to go down... The waves were crashing against the shore... The squawking of a sea gull... Melanie sat on the sandy beach, watching the sky change color. Her tan flip flops were next to her on the beach and she had dug her toes into the warm sand. Her knees were pulled up to her chest and her chin was on them. Her blond curls were down and around her face. Her attire this afternoon consisted of light blue faded and ripped up jeans and white baby doll t-shirt. Her blue iPod nano sat next to her on her flip flop her ear buds were in her ears. Melanie stared at the sun set, it was pretty... breathe taking. She came out here sometimes when she needed to get away from her brother. She only wanted to have some alone time and relax. Try and let go of the stress that has been raging in her brain for the last few weeks. Wondering if they did the right thing, selling the house in Michigan and moving out here to the big city, stressing over whether or not she'll even get into a college out here and if not, she needs to find a job soon. Melanie closed her eyes was she sighed, she was tired of this, seventeen and stressing way more than she should. She watched the movement of light across the closed lids of her eyes. The soft beats of the 'Let Me Go' by Three Doors Down thrummed through her ears. She didn't need it loud to hear it.. it would actually be really low to normal humans.. but her acute werewolf hearing allowed her to listen to it really low. ' It's getting late, Melanie... Should probably head home sometime soon...' She thought to herself. But in the long run, she knew she didn't want to go home yet. The wind blew a gust of air towards her, she shivered a little from the chill as the wind picked up her hair from around her and blew it back. She opened her eyes and looked out to the water one more time before glancing in either direction down the beach... It was rather empty, however that makes sense, its late and a little chilly to be at the beach. She reached down and picked up her iPod and started to search through the music on it for something worth listening too...

The sun was setting on another day...
Cat was walking along the beach, her sandals in hand. She wore a light blue sweater and dark-wash jeans, her hair pulled back in a messy bun. She knew it was a little cold out, but she needed to get out of her apartment and away from Nicole.
She loves her sister and..she is the only family she has left,...but sometimes, she can get on her nerves. They got into a fight..and it was something that they fought over before. Nicole does not understand..she's the social butterfly..not me.., she mused to herself. She knows Nicole means well, but you cannot force her... to be someone that she is not. So, that is why Cat is here, to get away for a while and cool off.
Then, a gust of wind blew her way...causing a few strands of her hair to whip her in the face. She gently bit her bottom lip, bracing herself against the cold. After a bit, as she was walking, she saw someone sitting in the sand. A girl, by the looks of it.
As Cat got a little closer, she saw that the girl had earbuds in her ears...so she didn't really want to bother her. She heaved a sigh, glancing out at the water. She could already feel..a wave of calm wash over her, as the waves crashed onto the shore.

Melanie was starting to sway a little to the music that was flowing through her ear buds. She stiffened when she smelt something, something different that crossed her senses. Then she heard the sigh. She turned quickly and looked down the beach and saw the other girl. The girl had dark brown hair in a messy bun, much like her own right usually was, but today, it was down and messy. She grabbed her iPod and turned it off, not that she couldn't hear the girl with it on as low as it was anyway.
She smiled over at the girl, "Hey... Lost?" She looked at her, she seemed lost.. or distant. Something. Melanie just couldn't put her finger on it. She quickly got to her feet is a swift elegant movement. Her blond curly hair falling over her like a curtain, that she swept away with her arm as she slipped her flip flops back onto her feet. She spun the earbuds around the ipod and then slipped it into her jeans pocket, waiting for the girl to answer her.

Cat closed her eyes, listening to the sound of the waves as they crashed...it seemed almost soothing. Then, as she began zoning out, she heard the girl's voice. "Hey... Lost?" Her eyes then fluttered open, slowly coming back to reality. She glanced over at the girl standing nearby. Nice blonde hair..., Cat observed, with a smile touching her lips.
"No...just thinking." she answered. A few beats of silence passed between the two of them. "I'm Catherine, by the way. But you can call me Cat. And you are?" she then added, as a breeze blew their way and more strands of her hair slipped from her bun and started whipping her in the face.
She tucked some of the hair behind her ear, feeling the sand in between her toes. It felt quite good. The girl seemed like a nice enough person, so Cat didn't really see any harm in introducing herself. She never really did that before, a first in her book, she was usually too shy to say her name first. Maybe the reason is, she felt so relaxed from listening to the waves. Who knows? But either way...she did it and she felt a bit proud of herself.

Melanie watched the girl, she was older, but she wasn't sure by how much. And she was human, that much Melanie got from her scent. She was pretty too, but that didn't completely interest Melanie, though she wasn't completely sure on her sexual orientation as of yet, so far... it hasn't wavered too far from the male gender.
"No...just thinking." Melanie nodded, understandable, she herself was out here doing the same thing. "I'm Catherine, by the way. But you can call me Cat. And you are?" Melanie smiled at the girl, the wind blew Cat's brown hair around as it did her own. She pushed it back with a casual shove of her arm through her hair. "I'm Melanie... It's nice to meet you Cat." She said as she turned towards the water, looking out at it Melanie felt calm. Her wolf, for some reason liked the noise it made. Maybe it was because Melanie loved playing in water when she was a child... Melanie grew up by Lake Superior, the largest of the great lakes that surrounded her home state of Michigan.
The are that flew over the water here smelled of salt and ocean... real freedom... The lakes air was different.. clean and homey, at least to her. 'God I miss home... ' She looked back at Cat and smiled. "So, what are you up to? Besides thinking? Just out for a late night walk on the beach by yourself? Not usually safe in New York..." She knew she sounded old for her age, but in reality, she was old for her age. Her past made her grow up far too quickly and she new that. But her future looked postive... so far...

OOC: Sorry Ellie...writer's block...I'll try harder...
The girl smiled at Cat, and she smiled back. "I'm Melanie... It's nice to meet you Cat." She nodded her head, watching as she turned towards the water. The breeze sent a slight chill down Cat's spine, causing her to shiver a bit. She slowly wrapped her arm around her stomach, as her mind started to drift off. Then, a thought..a memory appeared in her mind's eye. It was of, when she and Nicole were little and they went to the beach for the first time. Before their mother... was taken away from them. She closed her eyes, to push it back to the deep recesses of her mind.
And when she opened her eyes, a tear was found lingering on the edge. Cat wiped it away. "So, what are you up to? Besides thinking? Just out for a late night walk on the beach by yourself? Not usually safe in New York..." She then nodded her head slightly, it was a fair question. She glanced at the girl again, noticing that she seems a little younger than she was...but not by much.
"Well...I got into a fight with my sister, so I came here to cool off and calm myself down." she answered, slightly shrugging her shoulders. She curled her toes, feeling the sand in between them. A few beats of silence passed by them, just as a couple of more waves crashed onto the shore. Another smile touched her lips, as she slowly inhaled the salty, sea air...blowing in from the water. "What about you, Melanie? Are you out for a late night stroll on the beach as well?" she then asked, it was only fair to ask her the same question. Cat gently bit her lower lip, as she waited for Melanie to answer.

Melanie expected the glance that the girl threw her after her comment about being outside after dark in New York, but she wasn’t going to explain herself. She had no fear of this city. Her wolf was not afraid of it, why should she? The only thing her wolf disliked, was that it couldn’t run as much as it use to back home in Michgan. "Well...I got into a fight with my sister, so I came here to cool off and calm myself down."
Melanie nodded, she understood, her brother pissed her off more than once since they had moved here and she had left for a while as well… though last time, she left for a few days. Taking off into New England and shifting. Roaming the new land with her wolf. She had lost track of time and Mike had been furious with her. Melanie smirked to herself, that had been great. Seeing that look on Mikes face. But it probably wont happen again, not till he gives her her keys back.
"What about you, Melanie? Are you out for a late night stroll on the beach as well?" Melanie smiled slightly. “Yeah, you could say that. My brother took off to some stupid meeting and he wanted me to go with him. But I’m not really into that… Or at least I don’t think I am… ” She frowned, not sure if she sounded weird just then to this girl who had no idea what she was talking about. She probably did… But it didn’t matter.
“He thinks that I should be more social with his new friends, but I’m not feeling the whole” She paused, wondering how to phrase this without the word pack ”’large group of friends’ thing he has going on.. That probably makes no sense… I know… But I guess I’m weird like that. He’ll be angry with me when I get home.. ” She shrugged some. “What was the fight with your sister about? My brother and I still live together… So I know about sibling fights…” She laughed a little and then plopped back down on the beach closer to Cat.. Staring out into the water watching as the darkness swallowed up the water and the horizon..

Cat noticed, as Melanie nodded her head, after she mentioned the fight with her Nicole...meaning that she understood. It was somewhat of a relief to Cat, as a wave came and crashed onto the shore. A strand of her hair fell in front of her face, she then sighed...tucking it away behind her ear. "Yeah, you could say that. My brother took off to some stupid meeting and he wanted me to go with him. But I'm not really into that... Or at least I don't think I am..." And the smile that was on Melanie's face, about a minute before...it changed into a frown. Cat began to wonder why... but she didn't want to press the issue, if Melanie did not want to talk about it.
"I see." she muttered, even if she didn't really know what the girl meant. Cat felt like she had to say something...and that was all she could think of. So, she then decided to just listen, as Melanie spoke. She glanced out of the corner of her eye, over at the water. Then, Melanie asked her something that... pulled her slight attention from the water. "What was the fight with your sister about? My brother and I still live together... So I know about sibling fights..." She then heard her laugh a little... and then watched as the girl plopped down in the sand.
Cat smiled, thinking that was not such a bad idea. So, she went and plopped down on the beach next to Melanie. She set down her sandals beside her and leaned back, with her leg stretched out in front of her. "What we usually fight about... how I suck the fun out of everything and that I'm gonna turn into a spinster someday. One of us has to be the practical one... The way I see it, I simply live vicariously through her... She's the outgoing one, and I'm...well, not. I love her to death, don't get me wrong...she is the only family I got left, but sometimes...she tends to push a few of my buttons..." Cat answered, almost without taking a single breath. She slowly pulled up her knees to her chest... and rested her arms on top of them, and then rested her chin on top of her arms. She sighed.

She smiled as the girl plopped down next to her. It was just more comfortable and easy going this way. Melanie found a stick next to her laying on the sand and began to draw nothing special in the sand. She had crossed her legs and was drawing in front of her while Cat talked. "What we usually fight about... how I suck the fun out of everything and that I'm gonna turn into a spinster someday. One of us has to be the practical one... The way I see it, I simply live vicariously through her... She's the outgoing one, and I'm...well, not. I love her to death, don't get me wrong...she is the only family I got left, but sometimes...she tends to push a few of my buttons..."
Melanie frowned. She sounds like how Mike would feel on his side of their fights. She has called him a fun sucker before, meaning he sucked the fun out of things as well. But she never really thought much about it. Mike was… Mike, he was more grown up, he worked and she went to school. He was the big brother and she was just the little sister. It was getting old fast, but Melanie knew she could never afford to move out of the apartment till she got a job, which she can’t do while she’s going to school. She didn’t trust herself to have a job and actually pass her classes. It was something that she wasn’t ready to take on. “Sounds like some fights that I have with Mike, my brother.” She shrugged as she explained who Mike was. “He is usually on your side of the story… I’m always yelling at him about not being fun and never wanting to do anything.. And now look at me…” She laughed as she thought of it. “Here I am, sitting here while he’s at a party.” She frowned a little. Maybe she should go there, meet those other wolves that he had talked about. It might actually be good for her. Who knows? She shook her head. “Sibling fights blow over quickly though, at least ours do… One time, actually not too long ago, I ran away from home for .. oh hell.. I think it was about 4 days… We got into a huge fight before… but when I came back, he was just happy to see me home and alive… But he did take my car away…” She frowned at that…
Melanie was drawing trees and stars absently while she had been talking.. now she started on a wolf, walking through those trees in the darkness.. But the sun was going down so quickly now, that the wolf would probably not be finished before it could not be seen… "I'm sure you and your sister will be fine... It will just blow over... You shouldn't have to change who you are to make her happy.." She said and then sighed... She wished she could get herself to stop picking on Mike now..

Cat stared out at the horizon, as the sun was sinking fast behind it. Soon, all would be covered in darkness...turned into night. She heaved a little sigh, as another breeze blew more of her hair into her face. Cat rolled her eyes, starting to get irritated by it. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Melanie drawing in the sand with a stick. "Sounds like some fights that I have with Mike, my brother." "He is usually on your side of the story... I'm always yelling at him about not being fun and never wanting to do anything.. And now look at me..." "Here I am, sitting here while he's at a party." She heard her laugh, and Cat chuckled a tiny bit as well. Then, she noticed frown a little.
"Sibling fights blow over quickly though, at least ours do... One time, actually not too long ago, I ran away from home for .. oh hell.. I think it was about four days... We got into a huge fight before... but when I came back, he was just happy to see me home and alive... But he did take my car away..." Then, she saw it go to an all-the-way frown. Cat slightly nodded her head, understood completely. "Yeah... My sister Nicole did that once too. We got into this huge fight and that night, she got into one of her friends's car and took off... She was gone for a few days, I was beside myself, waiting for her to come back... Then, as soon as she came through that door, I threw my arms around her and squeezed her so tight... Then, I put her on bathroom duty for the next month..." she replied, chuckling to herself.
She then noticed what Melanie had been drawing: trees & stars. Cat smiled, slightly admiring her work, as she started drawing a wolf. "I'm sure you and your sister will be fine... It will just blow over... You shouldn't have to change who you are to make her happy." She nodded her head again, understanding. She has told Nicole the same thing, time and time again, and it doesn't seem to be getting through her head. "I know... And I have told her that before..." Cat lifts her hands towards her head, to demostrate her next point. "In one ear and out the other... You know what I mean?" she answered, dropping her hands and looking back at the water.

Melanie’s drawing in the sand was coming along just fine as she listened to Cat’s words "Yeah... My sister Nicole did that once too. We got into this huge fight and that night, she got into one of her friends's car and took off... She was gone for a few days, I was beside myself, waiting for her to come back... Then, as soon as she came through that door, I threw my arms around her and squeezed her so tight... Then, I put her on bathroom duty for the next month..." She laughed with Cat on that one, “I should remember that next time he makes me mad.. Since I already clean the apartment anyway.” She shrugged. "I know... And I have told her that before..." Melanie looked at Cat. "In one ear and out the other... You know what I mean?" Melanie smiled again, that was so like her. She listened to what Mike had to say, but barely ever paid attention and put it to action. It was just something she didn’t want to do so she never did it.
Melanie frowned some and looked down at her drawing and then quickly scribbled it out with her stick. She was tired of the lone wolf thing, she should have friend, family… other to lean on besides her brother. Maybe she should go to that meeting tonight. She pulled out her cell phone from her jeans and looked at the time and went to her text messages. Mike had texted her earlier with a plea for her to show up, with the time and address of where she was suppose to go. He had left her money on the counter for a cab, which was also in her pocket. She frowned down at her phone, looking over the address and then sighed. She would have to go home and change and get ready, she didn’t want to show up at someone house looking like she did right now.
She glanced at Cat and smiled. “I should probably get going… I really should go to that thing with my brother… Umm.. It was really cool talking to you and we should totally hang out again.” She handed Cat her cell phone, it was nothing fancy, just your very basic flip phone. “Here, put your number in and I swear I will call you soon to hang out more.” She smiled at the girl. She liked her, they had a lot in common, kind of. But it was good to meet new people. And this was one step closer to having a new friend. Who was human… and didn’t know she was a werewolf… but still one step closer to having a friend.

"I should remember that next time he makes me mad.. Since I already clean the apartment anyway." Cat smiled, hearing her laugh. Then, she saw Melanie frown a little and scribble out her drawing. Cat wondered why she did that...but she did not want to press the issue. A silence then ensued between them, with a few more waves crashing onto the shore. Cat's mind started to drift off, as she looked out at the water. Then, a memory came into her head...the time when Nicole wasn't able to swim back to shore and she went in to save her. She had warned her not to go out that far, but being a stubborn 11-year-old, she wouldn't listen. She wasn't a good swimmer, but Cat was.
She remained cool and calm about it, until they made it back to shore. She held onto her sister tight, almost balling. Their mom was nearly hysterical. Cat closed her eyes, as the memory then faded back into the deep recesses of her mind. She could almost hear her 11-year-old self...nearly lecturing Nicole. 'Don't...you.. ever scare me like that again! I only have one sister and I am not going to lose you...' And when she opened her eyes, Cat was back in reality..sitting next to Melanie.
She then glanced over at her, just as Melanie glanced at her and smiled. "I should probably get going... I really should go to that thing with my brother... Umm.. It was really cool talking to you and we should totally hang out again." And then, she handed Cat her cell phone. "Here, put your number in and I swear I will call you soon to hang out more." She could hardly believe this, as she typed in her number. No one has ever really said that to her before, since she's been here. "Wow...I don't really have any friends here in New York, besides my sister... Which, I guess that makes you my first one." Cat said with a smile, handing Melanie's phone back to her.

Melanie smiled at Cat, she liked her, they could probably be really good friends if they had time to hang out and find out more about each other. "Wow...I don't really have any friends here in New York, besides my sister... Which, I guess that makes you my first one." Melanie smiled and took her phone back. Melanie got to her feet and slipped her flip flops back on. “You would be my first friend in this big bad city too.” She smiled as she pocketed her cell phone. She would probably end up running home like she had ran here. She was quick, and she would make it home in decent time to shower and change and still make it to the dinner fashionably late.
“I will for sure call you soon… I feel bad leaving you out here by yourself though…” She frowned suddenly, thinking about that. There were worse things out in the dark in New York besides teen werewolves like herself. Cat could be found by something far worse. “You want me to walk you home or something before I head home?” She asked feeling as if she needed to at least ask. She wasn’t sure if Cat would take it or not, she was aware that Cat could tell she was younger that herself. So what could a teenager do, right?
Melanie wasn’t ready to give up all her secrets yet, plus, she didn’t know what kind of human Cat really was… Did she believe in this fairy tale world that Melanie now lived in? Who knew… Melanie smiled at Cat. But suddenly her mind was else where, thinking of what she should wear to the dinner thing.

Cat slipped on her sandals, then slowly stood up. Her time here at the beach wasn't she expected. She came here, just to blow off some steam, but ended up making her very first friend in the big..bad city. She is glad to have met Melanie, she seems like a really interesting person...and cannot wait to hang out with her again. "You would be my first friend in this big bad city too." She smiled, having another thing in common. A few moments of silence then passed, the two of them now standing there on the beach. Cat started to brush off some of the sand, now covering the backside of her jeans. A cool..light breeze blew past the two of them, blowing through Cat's hair. Then, more of her hair fell in front of her face. She sighed, tucking it behind her ears.
"I will for sure call you soon... I feel bad leaving you out here by yourself though..." Cat glanced over at Melanie, in time to see her smile turn into a frown. She nodded her head, definitely understanding her reason for concern. They don't call New York City the 'big bad city' for nothing. Cat glanced around them for a few moments, seeing no one except them. But that did not stop the slight, uneasy feeling she was now feeling in her gut. Then, Melanie's voice pulled her away from her thoughts. "You want me to walk you home or something before I head home?" As another wave crashed onto the shore, Cat let out a soft sigh of relief. "I would appreciate that a lot, thank you." she said, with a hint of relief in her voice.
"Luckily enough, I live not that far from here... You sure you don't mind?" she added, with a little shrug and a smile. She had a feeling that the two of them would get along..just fine. A glance towards the water; Cat inhaled deeply..breathing in the salty air coming in from the ocean.
