The night was just swallowing up the city and though this would usually create a decent amount of darkness, in New York… there was never complete darkness. Something that Gwen missed most was the complete darkness of the Georgia sky. The millions upon millions of stars that shown through the night sky, it was dazzling really. But here, in New York, you were lucky if you got a few stars to shine through the lit up sky good enough to see. That was the one thing that made Gwen so home sick. Almost home sick enough to go home and visit her father, whom she hated most in this god forsaken world, but she knew she would never go back. She may have left him some shred of hope that she would return home, but it wasn’t going to happen.
The young woman slipped out of the building that housed the company she worked for. Her attention on her phone as she finished texting someone of some importance for some reason or another, honestly she really did hate her job and was so happy to be going back to school. She needed to get out of business, she wanted something new and exciting. Law was sounding good, or medicine. Gwen was by no means stupid, she could do whatever she liked. It was just a matter of having the time to do it all in. She worked about 50 hours a week, slaving for a bunch of internet geeks. One of which just actually helped her set up her own myspace account, yay for her. She had never been much for computers, but she was getting the hang of it all real quick. They had even given her this fancy new phone. Blackberry something. Too much phone for her really, but it was nice.
She had a feeling deep inside that these little internet geeks were trying to woo her in some way and trust her, it wasn’t working. Gwen was a southern girl through and through and she wanted a man that could hold his own and didn’t need to woo a girl with fancy phones and such. She knew what she wanted in a man, now the trouble for her was finding what she wanted. She sent the text with a flick of her manicured nail and then stuffed the phone into her purse. Her penthouse wasn’t too far from here, and her laptop bag was beginning to ache her shoulder badly but she decided she wanted to stop and get a quick drink before heading home for the night. She sighed, flipped her red hair from her face and over her shoulder and then headed down the sidewalk with the rest of the crowd. There was a cute little bar in the building next to hers. A quiet little place that seemed to be her home away from home really.
The red haired wolfess moved with the crowd, aware of the people around her but also not. She needed to relax, let loose and it was Friday, so she could, but she really did need to get home too, she had a big project she needed to finish for work on Monday, but a few drinks couldn’t hurt, right? She smiled to herself, and continued on, her heels clicking rhythmically in her ears. To anyone else, it wouldn’t have stood out, but to her, she listened. She listened to a lot of things as she made her way thought the streets of New York. She listened to others conversations. Others secrets, she was such a drama addicted it really was hilarious some of the things she heard when people thought no one was listening. Even around the office it was amazing. She knew that several of them men that she worked with fantasized about her. It was really kind of sad, because she knew that they didn’t have a chance, but she wasn’t mean enough to squash their dreams just yet. She would let them keep dreaming their wet dreams about her.
Gwen finally made it to that quiet little bar that sat near her penthouse. The smooth sound of jazz came out of the bar, she wasn’t usually one for jazz, but this place was nice, and they usually varied their music nicely. She slipped in and took a seat in the corner, lucky to have gotten an open booth. She slipped her purse and computer bag from her shoulders and set them next to her against the wall and then took a deep breath. She was tempted to kick of her heels but she decided against that. She would be able to do that at home, and she never trusted the floors in New York City public establishments. She felt her phone vibrate and rolled her eyes. She pulled it out and quickly replied to the text message, one of the men she worked with, asking her if she wanted to go out for drinks after work. No thank you… She rolled her eyes and the slipped the phone out of sight as her waitress came and took her order. ”Jack and Coke please, darlin’ and don’t skimp on the Jack.” She said in her friendly southern accent. She really did need to work on getting rid of that, she got such weird stares from people. And they always seemed to think she was retarded or something because of her slow speech.
Gwen watched the young waitress walk away and then sighed and rested her elbow on the table and then put her chin in her hand, her brown eyes watching the people as they talked. Talking about old times, new flames, old flames, money, sex and cheating. Your basic conversations. Gwen sighed and then looked down at the table as she traced her napkin with her nail. She needed to get more friends.
