Rose walked the sidewalks of Times Square. It sure was beautiful at night. The moonlight reflected off the city lights, turning it into sparkles against the sky. Rose breathed in the warm air and smiled. She knew she belonged here. She felt safe. Ever since her family died and she was left as an undead, Rose never really felt like she belonged anywhere. She had to get away from Paris. Too many memories. She remembered hearing stories about New York when she was young. She wanted to be a singer and her dream was to sing in New York, but that was many years ago. Now Rose is....well....a vampire. She hasn't sang since her fathers birthday which was 2 weeks before the horrible fire. Rose shook her head, trying to forget the memories. If the screams won't fade, maybe the memory will. Rose walked into a little cafe and sat down. She ordered a cup of coffee and stared out into the streets.

Hayden closed his door behind him and turned the key in the lock. It had been so long since he'd actually seen the city, thriving at night. Since April, when I went to see Legally Blonde... he thought to himself. Walking out the door of the building in which he so long resided, he decided to explore the city a little further. In his 81 years of living in the city, he had yet to see it all. The statue of liberty, the Empire State building...It had been 3 years since he saw Times Square, usually only venturing to Broadway. He fought with himself the entire time on the street, struggling to control his urge to pounce. He decided to order coffee at a small cafe he had often passed by on his way to a show, but had never actually been in. He sometimes found that caffeine, contrary to a human's reaction, was soothing, something that made the monster inside him tame, at least for awhile. Not wanting to appear impolite, he waved a friendly wave at the girl, who was ordering her own coffee. But something perplexed him about this girl. She had no scent. No temptation. Hayden did not want to pounce on this girl as he had the people outside, had not wanted to drink her blood as the beast he contained often prompted him too. Hayden gasped, and, trying and failing to appear subtle, ran out of the cafe.

Rose was sipping her coffee when she looked up and saw a young man waving at her. She blushed and started to wave when she got a tingle down her spine. She never had that feeling before. She looked down, trying to control her breathing, but when she looked back up. He was gone. She looked around, but still no sight of him.

Hayden stopped. What am I doing? he asked himself. That was very rude of me, that poor girl. I should go back, apologize. But then he got to thinking...Why wasn't she one that he wanted? Even now, lost so deeply in thought, he was vaguely aware of the rumbling in his ears which told him to attack, to maim, to kill... Why didn't he feel that around her? It applied to all humans, he had never found an exception before. Sighing, his mind made up, he turned around and opened the door to the little cafe again. He spotted the girl, looking around. He went up to her, taking a deep breath, and spoke to her. "Hello," he said in his smooth, velvety voice. The voice he damned because of its docile deception, the voice of reason in his own mind... "So sorry to have taken off like that earlier...I dropped my wallet. I'm Hayden."

Rose finished her coffee, paid her bill, and kept staring out the window. She got lost in thoughts and memories. She jumped when she heard a voice. The boy had come back and sat next to her. His voice was smooth and sweet. She nearly melted in her chair. She got the tingly feeling again. Like she somehow knew him. She smiled. "Oh, don't worry, it's fine. I'm Rose."She still spoke with some what of a french accent. She had been trying to lose it since the fire.

Hayden, in hearing Rose's name, could not help but smile. "Roses are my favorite flowers..." ooops. Had he said that out loud? Upon realizing that those words were channeled through his vocal chords, he shook his head, trying to hide his embarrassment. He picked up on the girl's french accent right away; New York City was a host of all people, it was no stranger to him than his own voice. And he felt safe around this girl. He did not hear his conscience prodding him to stay away from his instinct; his instinct did not seem to kick in around this girl. He was extremely happy, not only at the fact that he could be around her without losing his head, but also that, for the first time in decades, he could actually speak to someone. "Well, Rose," Hayden continued, "What brings you to the city, all the way from France?"

Rose smiled and blushed slightly when he smiled at her. His smiled warmed her. She laughed softly when she heard him say roses were his favorite flowers. She also smiled, so he didn't think she was making fun of him. The tingle was still there but it was a sweet tingle. It made her feel like maybe everything will be okay. "My parents died in a fire a few months ago. I tried to stay in Paris but I just couldn't. Too many memories."She looked down and quickly brushed away tears."So now I'm here and I'm starting a new life. It's been good so far."She smiled at Hayden.

This poor girl... he thought to himself. "I'm very sorry...I shouldn't have asked." he said. He felt the deepest sympathy for this girl...he knew what it was like to watch your family die... But he was, again, perplexed. Just looking at her cry made him upset. It made him want to put an end to the pain that was inflicted to her. To make it better, somehow. But how? He decided that he was better off not thinking about that, as was she. He found that not thinking about his father was extremely painless. Something he had gotten into the habit of, until now. He looked out the window, to the bright lights of the city. "Well, Ms. Rose," he continued, softly, "New York City has much in store for you. The shops, the people, the general feel of the city...It was something I enjoyed greatly upon arriving. It's a lovely place. And I think...no, actually...I know you will enjoy it." He smiled at her.

Rose shook her head and smiled. "No, it's fine. You don't need to apologize. I'm beginning to be able to live with it."She liked how much he cared for her. She finally felt like she met someone that knows what she is going through. Now if she could only tell him her secret but she couldn't lose him....he's her only friend. "I bet it will be. I really want to find a home near the lights. I love the lights."

Hayden sighed. Still looking at the lights, he murmured, under his breath "I love this place..." He then turned to face Rose again, pondering what he should say next. She can never know. She'll think I'm a freak. Worse...she'll KNOW I'm a freak... This was the first person he'd been able to talk to in years, he couldn't risk that by revealing himself to her. He thought of something, but he hesitated for a moment. It's only the first time I've met her, it's kind of a weird thing to do, isn't it? But then again that's how they always do it in the plays... "Have you ever seen a Broadway show?"

Rose looked where he was looking. "Ya it really is beautiful."She stared out and got lost in the lights, than she heard him say something. "Hm?"She shook her head. "Sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Did you ask if I want to go to broadway?"I would love to go!Finally, she can she what her dream could have been like.

"Yes, I did ask," he said, smiling again. The most smiles in one day since...well, since he was human. And this girl made him feel like that again: human. She made him feel like a person, rather than an animal; which is what he now considered himself. "I have tickets to 4 different shows: Hairspray, Chicago, Xanadu, Avenue Q. Do any of these sound appealing to you?" He had of course, seen all these before, but he didn't care. He would gladly see anything again, if it was with her.

"Oh my! I like all of those. How about Hairspray?"That was her favorite musical when she was a little girl. She hasn't seen it in for ages. She put her arm through his and smiled at him. Finally, I get to go somewhere with someone. She thought. "Lead the way"

"Happily," he said, a wide grin appearing on his face. He led her out of the cafe, and onto Broadway, the street he had crossed over and over again in his...life? I guess you could call it that, he thought. He turned to her, pointing at the Neil Simon theater. "That's where we're headed." He waited until the signs told him to walk, and he crossed the street with her. He entered the theater, still holding her arm in his.

She gasped at the theater. Oh my! It's beautiful! She gaped at the beauty of the theater. She had never seen anything so beautiful in her life. She moved closer to Hayden as they walked in the theater. She gasped again. The inside of the theater was even more beautiful than the outside. She looked up at the chandlers and smiled. She had one in her old home. It always made her smile.
