Anelie let the cool water of the river run over her bare feet. With everyone finally out of her fur about the pack, she could willingly let the current steal away all of her troubles. The coolness of the forest had always been a sanctuary for her, although it was hard to find a forest in Louisiana that didn't symbiotic share a marsh as a next door neighbor. But all in all, it was a quiet and relaxing afternoon.
Anelie watched as the sun as it transitioned from it's afternoon brightness to a dimmer, more relaxed evening orange. It would be dark within the hour. She knew that she should probably get back to the others soon. Fury might have a fit otherwise. He was always worrying about her and her nightly habits. He even went as far as to saying that if he hadn't seen her sprout fur or had been the one to change her, he might mistake her for a blood sucker. She didn't really understand that either. Why did things always have to be good against evil? Night against day? Democrat versus Republican? Anelie just couldn't grasp the concept of the werewolves against the vampires. Didn't they originate form the same species: humans? If anyone asked her she'd say that the humans should be trying to kill weres and vamps off. Both were the real parasites of the world. But Fury thought otherwise, as did most other weres.
As if on cue, Anelie's cell beeped at her with the high pitched ring tone that hurt her ears. "Ani! Where the hell are you?! It's half past eight. You should've been here half an hour ago!" Fury's voice had an unusual edge to it. The kind of edge that told Anelie that something had gone horribly wrong.
"Fury, what happened? And don't you even think about lying to me." The coolness that Anelie could put into her voice was her secret weapon. Nobody dared to lie to her when she got like that.
"It's Kane, he's not dead, but he might as well be. The leeches got him pretty good. I think it's their way of trying to scare us off. But it's not gonna work..."
"Don't change the subject on me Fury," she screamed into the receiver, making it squeal in protest. "I want to know how bad it is."
"Don't take that tone with me, Ani! Remember who the pack leader is here." Fury yelled back.
"And it would do you well to remember who the Alpha female is Fury. It was a pack decision and not just because you were the one who changed me into a monster."
Ooh, a below the belt shot. Anelie and Fury were always fighting for dominance because both were born leaders. As leaders they would fight endlessly until someone got the better of the other. Anelie rarely pulled the you-did-this-to-me card on Fury, but it always guaranteed a win. He never had forgiven himself for changing her. It wasn't meant to happen, it was just a full-moon-induced accident.
"H-he's at the Vet's right now. He's in a coma. Vet says he's got a good chance of waking up, but...they beat him up real bad. Bite marks all over his body."
Anelie exhaled the breath she had been holding since she'd finished yelling at Fury. Bites from the vamps were never good. They hurt like hell and it took months for them to heal completely. It was smart to have him at the Vets. The Vet was the packs human familiar who knew what they were and was an expert in treating them. It was sort of an inside joke/code that the pack used to call their 'doctor.' "Okay, I'm on my way home now. I'll meet you there and we can go see how Kane's doing."
"All right, but hurry. It's getting dark and I don't want you coming home in pieces." The phone 'clicked' on the other end and Anelie shut her phone and shoved it into her pocket.
She would have to get home quickly and she really didn't see that happening in her human form. Quickly and uniformly she began to strip herself of all her clothing. Completely naked, she tied her clothes into a neat bundle and undid the long braid she had put her hair in. The wind bit at her snow-white skin and rustled her hair which ran down to the back of her thighs. She shivered as she prepared herself for the transformation. Almost instantly she found her center and felt the beast within her roar to life. In a flash of light where Anelie had once stood, there was a beautiful white Timber wolf, with deep green eyes and smooth white fur. Anelie did one full body shake, picked up her bundle of clothes with her teeth and was off, racing through the forest.
The smells and colors swirled past her as she ran at a full sprint. This is was the ultimate high for Anelie. Running was the epitome of 'free spirit.' Nothing in this whole world was more exhilarating than sprinting past everything, letting the wind brush through her fun, the panting that came naturally with a burst of energy. This was true freedom.
Night was falling fast though, and Anelie, as the hunter she was, knew that something was following her. And it was keeping up.
'No!' she thought to herself. 'This is bad, this is VERY bad. It's not even dark yet.' But when she looked around the forest it really had gotten dark, and the trees provided just enough cover for one of them to not sustain any burns. And then it jumped out in front of her. She stopped dead in her tracks, dropping her bundle to snarl at the vampire, making sure to show her long, white canines and appear as menacing as possible. She hated fighting, but if it meant saving her life, she was prepared for it.
