She had to escape. The city felt as if it was closing in on her, suffocating her thoughts. She wanted to change her life, but she found herself acting worse, if not the same.
Taking off her shoes, she allowed her toes to sink into the blazing hot sand. It felt as if a thousand red fire ants were running beneath her, biting all the while. Scorching her skin, the blazing sun rose higher into the empty pale blue sky. Giselle closed her eyes and listened to the silence. It swept over her like the first spring breeze, cool and refreshing, filled with new life.
She sank to her knees. New life. Oh how she wanted her old life. "I did not ask for this life..." she grunted to the desert. The sand remained still, waiting for her to break. Giselle felt hopeless. There was no end to this darkness that consumed her. A single tear escaped her eye. Giselle gathered her emotions and turned them cold. She was not about to cave into weakness. Instead, she glared at the desert and dared it to challenge her. Cupping her hands, she dug into the earth, the grains of sand prickled her palm. Slowly she allowed a waterfall of sand leave her hand. Time slowed down, molding together. She did not know how much time had passed.

"What do you want from me?" she whispered to the desert, not expecting a reply.
